After more than a decade of waiting, Apple Pay India 2026 appears ready for its long-awaited debut. Multiple credible reports, including those from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Reuters, indicate that Apple is preparing to launch its contactless payment service in India as early as October 2026.
For iPhone and Apple Watch users in India, this could mark a significant shift. Instead of relying solely on third-party apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm, users may soon make secure tap-and-pay transactions directly through the Apple Wallet.
Apple Pay India 2026 Launch Timeline
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple is “finally” gearing up to bring Apple Pay to India by October 2026. Gadgets 360 and other outlets have also covered the same report.
The October window comes after earlier expectations of a mid-2026 launch that did not materialise. Apple has been in discussions with Indian banks and card networks for months, and the current timeline appears more concrete than previous reports.
Apple itself has not yet made an official announcement, so the exact launch date within October remains unconfirmed. Industry watchers expect the rollout to begin gradually rather than as a full nationwide launch on a single day.
Axis Bank Expected as First Banking Partner
Reuters reports that Axis Bank is set to become Apple’s initial banking partner for Apple Pay in India. The Mumbai-based private lender, which is the fourth-largest credit card issuer in the country, is expected to enable its credit cards for the service at launch.
Apple is also in talks with larger rivals HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. However, commercial terms with those lenders had not been finalised at the time of the reports. Apple typically expands support bank by bank through separate agreements, a pattern it has followed in other markets.
At launch, the focus is expected to be on Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank. Users with eligible cards should be able to add them to the Apple Wallet and make contactless payments at NFC-enabled terminals.

Will Apple Pay Support UPI at Launch?
This remains the biggest open question around Apple Pay India 2026.
Mark Gurman has indicated that Apple Pay could support India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) alongside card-based payments. UPI dominates the Indian digital payments landscape, accounting for roughly 84% of digital transaction volume according to data cited by the Press Information Bureau.
However, Reuters’ reporting on the Axis Bank rollout did not mention UPI as part of the initial launch. Earlier coverage from Business Standard suggested that Apple would start with credit cards only, with UPI support coming later.
Adding UPI would require approvals from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and a sponsor bank arrangement. Technical and commercial discussions around biometric authentication and NFC access have also been cited as factors that could delay UPI integration.
For now, the safer expectation is that Apple Pay will launch with card payments first. UPI support, if it arrives, is more likely to follow in a subsequent phase.
How Apple Pay Will Work for Indian Users
Once available, Apple Pay will allow eligible iPhone and Apple Watch users to:
- Add supported credit cards to the Apple Wallet
- Make contactless (tap-and-pay) payments at NFC-enabled point-of-sale terminals
- Authenticate transactions using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode
- Keep actual card numbers tokenised and never shared with merchants
This experience is already familiar to Apple Pay users in dozens of other countries. You can learn more about how Apple Pay works globally on the official Apple Pay page.
In India, it will offer a convenient alternative to opening a separate payments app for in-store purchases, provided the merchant terminal supports contactless cards.
Apple Pay does not charge users a fee for using the service. Any commercial arrangements are typically handled between Apple, the issuing banks and the card networks.
What iPhone Users in India Should Know
Here is a practical summary of what current and prospective users can expect:
1. Compatibility
Apple Pay works on iPhones and Apple Watches that support the feature. Most recent models with Face ID or Touch ID and NFC capability should be eligible once the service goes live in India.
2. Supported Cards at Launch
Initially, only Axis Bank credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are expected. Support for HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and other lenders is likely to expand over time. Jump back to the Axis Bank section for more details.
3. UPI Availability
Do not assume UPI will be available on day one. Most reports point to a card-first launch, with UPI remaining uncertain. See the UPI support section above.
4. Competition with Existing Wallets
India already has a mature digital payments ecosystem. PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and Samsung Wallet (which already supports both NFC and UPI) are well established. Apple Pay will need to prove its convenience and security advantages to gain traction.
5. Merchant Acceptance
Contactless card terminals have become more common in Indian cities and larger retail outlets. However, acceptance will still be lower than QR-code-based UPI payments in many smaller shops and informal markets.
Why the Launch Matters
Apple’s share of India’s smartphone market has grown significantly in recent years, reaching around 8% according to some research estimates. Bringing Apple Pay to the country closes a long-standing gap in the company’s services portfolio and gives iPhone owners a more integrated payments experience.
At the same time, Apple is entering a market structured very differently from most countries where Apple Pay already operates. UPI’s dominance, low or zero merchant fees on many transactions, and the recent introduction of UPI Tap & Pay mean Apple will face strong competition from day one.
The timing is also notable. From mid-October 2026, certain UPI merchant transactions above ₹2,000 are expected to attract a 0.4% merchant discount rate, which could influence how both consumers and businesses view different payment options. More details are available in reports from The Indian Express.
What Happens Next
Until Apple makes an official announcement, all details remain based on reports from Bloomberg, Reuters and Indian media. Users should watch for:
- An official statement from Apple confirming the India launch
- Axis Bank communications about supported cards
- Any update on UPI integration or additional banking partners
- Availability of the Apple Pay option inside the Wallet app for Indian Apple IDs
For now, Apple Pay India 2026 looks set for an October arrival focused on Axis Bank credit cards and contactless payments. Whether UPI arrives at the same time or later will determine how widely the service is used in everyday Indian transactions.
iPhone users who already hold Axis Bank credit cards are best positioned to try the service first. Others may need to wait for additional bank partnerships or UPI support before Apple Pay becomes a daily payment tool.
This article is based on reports published in September 2026 by Bloomberg (Mark Gurman), Reuters, Business Standard, The Indian Express and other outlets. Apple has not yet confirmed the launch timeline, banking partners or feature set. Details may change.
